Estudos Avançados
The program of Advanced Studies refers to a set of activities, which includes the intensive teaching of advanced concepts in different areas of knowledge. The Advanced Studies program includes Advanced Courses, Dialogue with Scientists cand Science in Action courses.
Teaching is organized in modules, lasting ten weeks. The courses for Basic and Secondary Education are taught, respectively, by young monitors with Master's degrees in scientific areas, and by successful young scientists with PhDs, from universities and scientific research institutes. Lecturers challenge students and teachers to learn, interactively, mainly in the laboratory, in scientific research scenarios, the most interesting scientific concepts of modern knowledge, and how this knowledge is acquired.
A model laboratory was created at IEC, equipped with the basic instruments to offer experimental teaching. This type of laboratory is being replicated in the schools that adhere to the project. Advanced courses take place in these laboratories at IEC and in schools.
In each course, ten students and two teachers of Basic or Secondary Education have the opportunity to use the new technologies of Science in the laboratory. Students and teachers learn to be selective in their approach to scientific problems, to be objective and to use a language of scientific rigor.
In activities parallel to the courses, students and teachers attend scientific internships, study visits and conferences.
The Advanced Courses, aimed at students and teachers of basic and secondary education, are courses that teach subjects that go beyond what students would be expected to learn in the school year in which they are in.
The Dialog with Scientists courses allow students to have an informal interaction with scientists from different areas of knowledge, who explain their academic path, and describe and illustrate their activity as scientists.
Science in Action courses are an opportunity for scientific research institutes to publicize their specific scientific projects within the school community.
The IEC promotes, in partnership with the IEC-ALUMNI Association, scientific internships for high school students in scientific research institutes.
The IEC organizes, in partnership with the schools, study visits for students and teachers to universities and scientific research institutes.
The IEC promotes, at schools and at the IEC, conferences on various topics, such as Science, Health, Education, given by professors and researchers from universities and scientific research institutes.
